About this exhibit

Twelve hundred glass spheres hang on threads from a dark ceiling in a room whose floor and four walls are mirrors, so the field of them carries on past every wall and under the floor and has no edge: a canopy of small ones overhead, four moons of clear glass with the room upside down inside them, and over the crossing a well in the ceiling with a column of spheres hanging down it. Each holds a cluster of small lights at its centre, a crystal of glints around them and a colour of its own, and carries the lights near it as points on its glass. A moment after you arrive the whole room lights away from you. Walk among them. Stand still beside one and it brightens, and its light is handed on in your colour one sphere at a time along a single path through every sphere in the room, the whole way round and home to the sphere beside you; tap one and it chimes, swings on its thread and answers at once. Every twenty-odd seconds a tide comes in from a wall in a colour of its own, and a little over once a minute another visitor crosses the room, a dark figure against the lights, repeated in every mirror as you are, and stops to face you if you are standing still, at which its own light sets out along the same path. The room runs four movements, the real room's own, opening on colour: twenty-nine colours; fire, which opens with all the light in the room draining into one sphere over the crossing, a second of black, and the burst back out; an icy white; and five tinted whites at once.
